CHAPTER 4
Raven threw me and Christella into the dungeon roughly. I grabbed her before she hit the wall.
"Thanks." She said.
Raven laughed and slammed the door shut. Vince came and gave us some "advice".
"Watch your mouth and be polite."
"Thanks. Wonderful advice. No can you help us out of here?" I asked impatiently.
"No-can-do. Sorry buddy." And he left.
"What is this all about?" Christella asked.
"I'm wondering the same thing. I only know a little bit." I confessed.
"Well tell me what you know."
"All I know is that there are these trials that I...we...have to go through. They will be risking your life to see if I risk mine to save yours."
"Who is they?"
"I don't know."
"How can you not know!?" She screamed.
"I'm sorry." I started crying and then she started crying so we held each other.
"Why? Why do we have to do this?" She sobbed.
"Because you're a human and I'm a vampire."
"But that shouldn't matter."
"I know baby."
We kissed each other and said our good-byes in case they came to separate us soon and quickly.
"I love you." I said.
"I love you too." She replied.
They brought our food an hour later.
"Wait." I said before she could take a bite. "Let me try it first." I took a bite and nodded to her to say it was okay. I took tray, along with mine, to the bars and threw them at the guard. That made Christella laugh. And her laughing made me laugh. When the guard hit the bars for us to be quiet we did. But we were still laughing inside.
I laid her in my lap and a few minutes later she fell asleep. I watched her breathing; her beautiful face so peaceful. I was happy to see her sleep. I don't know when i fell asleep but I remember waking up to the sound of the door closing. I looked up and saw Christella being carried away by Raven.
"No!" I screamed. "Bring her back!"
But Raven kept walking away with Christella. I didn't know what they were going to do to her.
Vince came by. "Hey. How are you?"
"Just fine now that Christella is gone." I said sarcastically.
"You've got a mouth boy. Watch it."
"I can't cause it's on my mouth."
"I mean it David. They don't tolerate mouths like yours."
"Thanks. You've been a big help."
He threw his hands up in a surrender gesture. "Whatever. But when the time comes, I'm not going to be there to help you. So toughen up and watch your mouth."
"I'll try." I said as he was walking away.
As I was sitting there awaiting the first trial, I saw flashbacks of me and Christella running through the meadow. Her beautiful laughter and her smile that could make a star seem dull. And her hair, that strawberry blond hair, swinging from side to side as she ran from me, screaming with laughter. it seemed almost real as I sat there smiling. Then the terrifying question i was hoping to avoid formed in my head. Would I ever see her again? Oh Christella, sweet, sweet Christella I love you. I bowed my head and stared at the floor. I stared at my hands and I could feel her hands in between mine. I cried as I thought about last night being the last time I saw her. I screamed in anger and sadness, hoping they would bring her back. But to no avail. So I went back to the good times. The times when we walked hand in hand through the tall grass and watched as millions of fireflies flew up and surrounded us. The tree from which the swing hung. The swing from which we sat together; swinging and talking about our lives. And the huge oak tree we climbed together. I would give anything to go back to those times.
I remember the plans we made. I remember our conversation.
"We can get married, own a house, and have kids." She fantasized.
"Whoa!"
"What?"
"No kids yet." I laughed. "We're still too young."
"Oh! I guess you're right."
It's my fault we're in this mess. If I hadn't asked her to marry me then she wouldn't have to risk her life. Why do I have to get involved with humans; why couldn't I've waited until a nice vampire girl came along, and an emo one of course.
"Shut-up David." I say to myself. "You love her. You'd die for her right? Yes. So go through this and then you can marry her, buy a house, and have kids. That's what she wants. Anything she wants right? If we even make it out of here. Shut-up! Just shut-up! Damn it!"
"Quiet down in there!" The guard said.
"I will once you let me see Christella again."
"Well I'm just a guard. I don't know when she'll be back."
I started banging on the door rattling the bars. He yelled at me to be quiet but I didn't listen.
"Raven!" He yelled.
"Yes Spear?"
"Make this boy shut-up." Spear smiled.
I looked into Raven's eyes, showing him that I wasn't afraid. He looked at me, cracked his knuckles, and said, "with pleasure." He balled up his fist and punched me in the eye and I fell unconscious.
I woke up to the sound of Christella's voice whispering softly in my ear.
"David wake up sweetie." I could feel her soft hands inspecting my black eye. I opened my one good eye and I looked at her. She smiled and i tried to smile back but i winced in pain. She kissed me and i kissed her back. I hugged her and she hugged me back.
"I am so sorry I us into this mess. More you then me." I said.
"It's fine. We'll make it through this together." She said
"You're so beautiful." I complimented.
"He really got you didn't he?"
"Yeah."
"I'll kill him."
"Oh you think so?"
"No one touches my vampire."
Vince was standing at the bars, "I told you to keep your mouth shut."
"I did. I didn't say a word. To anyone."
"That's a lie." Spear, the guard, said.
He was a strange looking man. His face hidden behind an opera mask. But he wore a cape that had a collar that lifted up around his neck. It was a Phantom of the Opera look.
"Oh." Raven said. "Lord Christoff wanted me to tell everyone that it isn't many trials it is just one really long one. More like a journey with many obstacles. Bye." And he walked off. I didn't even see him walk up to the cell.
"I would like for you to meet," Vince said. "Spawn, Lord Butler's comrade. And Dragon, Lord Hobson's comrade."
Spawn and Dragon were both muscular men with shaved heads and that fire tattoo. They looked the same but I didn't see them. I saw Spawn taking Christella while Vince and Dragon held me back. I screamed and fought but she was already gone. They were gone.
"You Bastard." I said to Vince. "I thought we were friends. I thought you would help us."
"I'm a great actor aren't I?"
I lunged at him, catching him off guard. He clawed at my face but I took no notice. I punched him in the nose and enjoyed the sound of his bones crunching beneath my blow. I enjoyed the look of horror on his face and the screams of pain. Blood was coming out of his nose and I enjoyed that too. I took his hand and bent his wrist back until his bones were dust. Then I was yanked back harshly and thrown to the floor. I stayed there and looked at Vince with a mix of horror and happiness that I had hurt him. I don't think I ever saw him again. I wonder why? I felt something warm run down my cheek and I put my hand to my face. When I pulled it away, it was covered in blood from the scratch marks he left.
"I love you Christella." I said subconsciously. But I didn't get an answer back. Good-bye love. I would do anything to taste her lips again.
An hour later, Spawn came by.
"Get up you lazy brute."
"Why should I?" I spat at him.
"Because it's time."
"For what? Time for what?"
"Your trial of course."
"Where's Christella."
"Oh she's already at Gallows Hill."
